چکیده
The dual approach to the Ginzburg-Landau theory of a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor is reviewed. The dual theory describes a grand canonical ensemble of fluctuating closed magnetic vortices, of arbitrary length and shape, which interact with a massive vector field representing the local magnetic induction. When the critical temperature is approached from below, the magnetic vortices proliferate. This is signaled by the disorder field, which describes the loop gas, developing a non-zero expectation value in the normal conducting phase. It thereby breaks a global U(1) symmetry. The ensuing Goldstone field is the magnetic scalar potential. The superconducting-to-normal phase transition is studied by applying renormalization group theory to the dual formulation. In the regime of a second-order transition, the critical exponents are given by those of a superfluid with a reversed temperature axis.

Using density matrix renormalization group techniques, we have studied the ground state of the 4-leg t-J ladder doped near half-filling. Depending upon J/t and the hole doping x, three types of ground state phases are found: (1) a phase containing d x 2 −y 2 pairs; (2) a striped CDW domain-wall phase, and (3) a phase separated regime. A CDW domain-wall consists of fluctuating hole pairs and thi...

The partition function of the double-layer XY model in the (dual) Villain form is computed exactly in the limit of weak coupling between layers. Both layers are found to be locked together through the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, while they become decoupled well inside the normal phase. These results are recovered in the general case of a finite number of such layers. When re-int...

We study the weakly-interacting Bose gas in both two and three dimensions using a variational approach. In particular we construct the thermodynamic potential of the gas to within ladder approximation and find by minimization an accurate mean-field description of the dilute Bose gas. Using spin-polarized atomic hydrogen as a specific example, we obtain an improved description of the Bose-Einste...

We report on some attempts to use lattice QCD to investigate topics in strong interaction phenomenology which are usually interpreted in terms of soft Pomeron exchange.
